Trail Running in the Snow And Rain

Trail running on a damp fall day is surprisingly comfortable. Light breathable clothing and constant motion allows one to balance the moisture coming in with the heat going out.

If you stop too long in any one place without extra clothing you might freeze so you just keep moving. I've gotten wetter and certainly more uncomfortable from sweat hiking the same trails in mid summer heat than running them in fall.

It is also allows one to visit mountain places at their most moody. Before the thick snow and ice that ease winter travel there is nothing but thousands of feet of wet granite cloaked in fog and cloud. Not ideal conditions for most sports but it makes familiar trails seem new and I find myself striding out the miles to see what lies around the next bend.
